PITTSBURGH — — So much for the weight of history. Or practicing. Or having your head coach on the sideline. Or an emotional leader on the field.

The Cleveland Browns overcame all of it. The burden of carrying the mantle of a franchise that’s long been a punchline. A schedule ravaged by a COVID-19 outbreak. A rival that for years has treated them like a harmless little brother.

All of that’s over. For now. And maybe for good.

The Browns dismantled the Cheap Pittsburgh Steelers Jerseys 48-37 in the wild-card round Sunday night, picking up the franchise’s first postseason victory in more than a quarter-century and earning a trip to Kansas City next Sunday to face the defending Super Bowl champions.

“We believe in the people in the room no matter what’s going on,” quarterback Cheap Baker Mayfield Jersey said. “We knew that everybody was counting us out. There was no extra pressure or anything. No one believed in us besides us.”

Playing with first-year head coach Kevin Stefanski, Pro Bowl guard Cheap Joel Bitonio Jersey and top cornerback Cheap Denzel Ward Jersey back in Cleveland after all tested positive for COVID-19, Cleveland (12-5) raced to the biggest first half by a road team in NFL playoff history then held on.

Mayfield threw for 263 yards and three touchdowns, including a screen pass that Cheap Nick Chubb Jersey turned into a 40-yard score that halted Pittsburgh’s momentum after the Steelers pulled within 12. Cheap Kareem Hunt Jersey added 48 yards and two TDs on the ground while Cleveland’s defense forced five turnovers to hand the Steelers (12-5) a staggering loss.

The victory was the Browns’ first postseason triumph of any kind since beating New England on New Year’s Day 1995 — three months before Mayfield was born — and their first playoff win on the road since Dec. 28, 1969.

The significance wasn’t lost on special teams coordinator Mike Priefer, a Cleveland native who found himself filling in when Stefanski tested positive for COVID-19.

“I grew up (a Browns fan), so I know what this means,” Priefer said.

Cleveland did it despite practicing just once over the last two weeks and having lost 17 straight at Heinz Field. The Browns did it with efficiency and swagger. And they did it with Priefer at the controls and offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt taking over the play-calling duties as Stefanski watched in his basement back in Ohio.

“We have a resilient team,” Mayfield said. “Defense played great in the first half and we kind of stalled out and let them climb back in the game, but that’s a great team win right there — guys stepping up all over the board. I’m proud of these guys.”

The Steelers certainly helped, ending a season in which they started 11-0 with a thud that could reverberate for years. Cheap Ben Roethlisberger Jersey ended his comeback season by throwing for 501 yards on an NFL-record 47 completions with four touchdowns and four interceptions.

“I don’t have any magical answers,” Roethlisberger said. “We just didn’t put it together. Tonight, the glaring issues is we turned the ball over.”

And over. And over. And the NFL’s third-ranked defense could do little to stem the tide. The Steelers led the NFL in sacks but failed to get to Mayfield. Cleveland’s 48 points were the most Pittsburgh has given up in the playoffs, surpassing the 45 to Jacksonville in the 2017 playoffs.

Pittsburgh’s problems started on the first play from scrimmage when center Cheap Maurkice Pouncey Jersey snap sailed by Roethlisberger into the end zone. Cleveland’s Cheap Karl Joseph Jersey fell on it for a touchdown. Roethlisberger threw three first-half interceptions, two of which led directly to Browns scores.

By the time the Steelers found their footing, they were down 28-0. Even when they did get it going on a 1-yard touchdown run by Cheap James Conner Jersey with 1:44 to go in the half, the Browns stormed right back. Mayfield capped a cathartic opening half with a masterful 64-yard drive that ended with a 7-yard toss to Cheap Austin Hooper Jersey with 34 seconds remaining. Pittsburgh countered with a field goal in the closing seconds but trailed 35-10 at the break.

Pittsburgh tried to claw back in it. The Steelers pulled within 35-23 at the end of the third quarter. Facing fourth-and-1 at the Pittsburgh 46 on the first play of the fourth, Tomlin opted to punt.

“I wanted to pin them down and maybe provide a short field for their offense,” Tomlin said. “I just wanted to keep the momentum going in terms of field positioning.”

It didn’t work out. The kick bounced into the end zone for a touchback and Mayfield calmly took Cleveland 80 yards in six plays. The sideline erupted as Chubb streaked into the end zone.

So much for the Browns being the Browns, a winking assessment Steelers wide receiver Cheap JuJu Smith-Schuster Jersey made about Cleveland in the middle of the week. Regardless of the intent — Smith-Schuster said after the game he didn’t regret it — Mayfield and All-Pro defensive end Cheap Myles Garrett Jersey took it to heart.

Then, in front of a mostly empty stadium and a national audience so accustomed to seeing them stumble, the Browns, who didn’t win a game in Garrett’s first season, took out their frustration by landing one haymaker after another.

“We’re the Cleveland Browns,” Garrett said with a smirk. “Same old Cheap Cleveland Browns Jerseys.”

Not so much anymore.

INJURIES

Browns: All-Pro tackle Cheap Jack Conklin Jersey was cleared to play after being listed as questionable with an “illness” on Friday. His return didn’t last long. He exited in the first half with a hamstring injury. Guard Michael Dunn, stepping in for Bitonio, left in the fourth quarter with a calf issue.

Steelers: Rookie linebacker Cheap Alex Highsmith Jersey sustained a high ankle sprain in the second half and did not return.

UP NEXT

Browns: Will make their first divisional-round appearance since the 1994 playoffs when they face the Chiefs.

Steelers: Head into what will be a busy offseason. Several high-profile players, including Smith-Schuster and outside linebacker Cheap Bud Dupree Jersey, will become free agents. The 38-year-old Roethlisberger will also have to decide whether he wants to return for an 18th season.

Next man up: The Steelers depth at inside linebacker was wiped out heading into Sunday night’s game against the Bills, with Cheap Vince Williams Jersey on the Reserve/COVID-19 List, Cheap Robert Spillane Jersey placed on the Reserve/Injured List, and Devin Bush already on IR.

So it was up to newcomer Cheap Avery Williamson Jersey, acquired via trade from the New York Jets earlier this season, and Cheap Marcus Allen Jersey, a converted safety, to hold down the fort.

And they did just that.

Williamson led the team in tackles with 11, including nine solo stops.

“I can’t say enough about his work and his work to get up to speed and embracing the responsibility of being a central communicator for us,” said Tomlin. “He was better. It is reasonable to expect him to continually get better with each opportunity, but I can’t say enough about his efforts in those areas.”

Allen, who has very little experience at linebacker on the NFL level, was second in tackles with eight, including five solo stops and a tackle for a loss.

“Can’t say enough about a guy like Marcus Allen, who’s new to the position, who’s new to the number of snaps he had and getting the type of effort that we got from him,” said Tomlin.

Responding well: During his press conference a week ago, Tomlin showed his displeasure with dropped passes, clearly stating if guys don’t make the catch, the ball won’t come their way.

“They can catch the ball, or they can get replaced by someone who will catch it,” said Tomlin. “It’s just as simple as that. Like I’ve often said, I expect guys to make routine plays, routinely. When there is a pattern of that not happening, we have to look at who we are throwing the ball to.”

On Sunday night, after Cheap Diontae Johnson Jersey dropped the ball multiple times, Tomlin did what he said he would and sent him to the bench in the first half. Tomlin gave the young receiver another chance, and he responded. Cheap Ben Roethlisberger Jersey hit Johnson in the third quarter for completions of five and six yards, and Johnson caught one for 17 yards in the fourth quarter.

“I thought he responded appropriately,” said Tomlin. “He didn’t pout. He waited for his next opportunity and when his next opportunity came, he was productive. So, we’ll move forward.”

A lot on the line: When the Steelers take on the Bengals on Monday Night Football, there will be a lot on the line with the potential of winning the AFC North with a victory. But coming off two straight losses, Tomlin knows they have their work cut out for them.

“There’s a lot on the table for us,” said Tomlin. “We are excited about primetime football. We essentially laid an egg last week on primetime football, so we are excited about getting another opportunity at that.

“We are back in the AFC North in divisional play. If you want to dominate the NFL and be one of the teams in contention to dominate the NFL, it starts first and foremost with divisional play. We have an opportunity to play a divisional game and secure an AFC North title.

“Those are tangible things that have our attention and excitement as we work this week. For us, it’s about assessing who we have available to us and sharpening our sword for the battle that lies ahead. We expect to get the very best of Cincinnati. That’s a rivalry-type game, if you will. It’s an opportunity for them to have a feel good in the midst of a trying circumstance of a season for them. It’s Monday Night Football. We understand and expect all of that.”

The Steelers have clinched a spot in the 2020 AFC Playoffs, and with a win in Cincinnati or a loss by the Cheap Cleveland Browns Jerseys against the New York Giants, the team would host at least one playoff game at Heinz Field. The team is now preparing for the potential of hosting fans at Heinz Field for postseason games after the current Pennsylvania state orders for crowd size expire on January 4, 2021.

As part of those preparations, the team sent an email to season ticket holders on Tuesday with details about selecting seats for postseason games. In the email, the team said it does anticipate there being a limited number of tickets available for home playoff games, and thus, may not be able to accommodate all season ticket holders who wish to attend playoff games.

The email also outlined other important details in a “What You Need To Know” section, which included the following: timeframe to order tickets, details on ticket pods and locations which take into account social distancing guidelines and payment information.

“We are preparing for the possibility of hosting fans at Heinz Field for the postseason after the current State orders expire in Jan. 4, 2021,” said Steelers spokesman Burt Lauten in a statement on Tuesday. “Our goal is to use our previous stadium model and manifest from earlier this year to host approximately 7,500 people at the stadium in January.

“We appreciate those fans who have attended games this year for their support and cooperation in adhering to the policies and protocols that made Heinz Field a safe place to attend a game. We have communicated with our season ticket holders and suite holders about the potential return of fans to Heinz Field in January, and we look forward to hopefully having fans back in the stands for any potential playoff games.”

The Steelers’ dreams of an undefeated regular season are history and they’ll have to wait at least until this Sunday to clinch a return trip to the postseason following Washington’s 23-17 victory this evening at Heinz Field.

Washington kicker Dustin Hopkins’ 45-yard field goal with 2:04 left in regulation provided Washington’s first lead. The visitors got into position to break a 17-17 tie on a 29-yard completion from quarterback Alex Smith to wide receiver Cam Sims on third-and-4 from the Washington 44-yard line.

Steelers quarterback Cheap Ben Roethlisberger Jersey was intercepted by former Steelers linebacker Jon Bostic on a pass that was tipped by defensive end Montez Sweat on first-and-10 from the Steelers’ 25 with 2:04 left in the fourth quarter.

Hopkins added another 45-yard field goal with 17 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

The Steelers’ last-gasp possession started from their 25 and ended with a completion to tight end Cheap Eric Ebron Jersey that ran out the clock.

“We’re not frustrated,” cornerback Cheap Mike Hilton Jersey said. “We just know we gotta play better.”

Added quarterback Ben Roethlisberger: “We just need to make plays. I need to deliver us into plays that are best suited for situations. It starts with me. I need to be better.”

The 5 p.m. kickoff was the second game in a stretch that includes three in 12 days for the Steelers, who next play this Sunday night in Buffalo.

The Steelers fell to 11-1.

Washington improved to 5-7.

“We just gotta make routine lays routinely,” head coach Mike Tomlin said. “We’re not making them routinely enough right now.”

The Steelers finished with slight edges in total net yards (326-318) and third down conversions (6-for-15, 40 percent to Washington’s 4-for-17, 24 percent).

Washington had a slight edge in time of possession (30:26-29:34) after having the ball for just 12:49 in the first two quarters.

Washington moved 53 yards in eight plays midway through the fourth and tied the game at 17-17 on a 15-yard touchdown pass from Smith to tight end Logan Thomas and Hopkins’ extra point.

Fill-in kicker Matthew Wright’s 37-yard field goal on the first play of the fourth put the Steelers ahead by seven at 17-10. Wright was activated from the practice squad prior to kickoff to replace Cheap Chris Boswell Jersey (hip).

Washington closed to within 14-10 after receiving the kickoff to open the second half. The visitors used 14 plays to drive 82 yards in 6:44 on a march that was capped by a 1-yard touchdown burst by running back Peyton Barber. Hopkins’ extra point drew Washington within four. Washington was able to extend the drive on a 31-yard flanker screen from Smith to Sims on third-and-14 from the Washington 14-yard line. Smith also hooked up with Thomas for a 30-yard gain to the Steelers’ 1.

The Steelers tied an NFL record when Robert Spillane sacked Alex Smith, for a loss of nine yards, in the first quarter of Monday’s game against the Washington Football Team.

With that sack, the Steelers now have a streak of 69 games with at least one sack, tying the Tampa Bay Buccaneers who set the NFL record over a five-season span (1999-2003). If the Steelers record a sack next week against the Buffalo Bills, they will set a new NFL record at 70 consecutive games with a sack.

The Steelers streak began in Week 8 of the 2016 season against the Cheap Baltimore Ravens Jerseys. James Harrison sacked Ravens’ quarterback Joe Flacco for the first of three sacks that day. Ryan Shazier and Anthony Chickillo also each added a sack.

During the span from 2016-2020, T.J. Watt has the most sacks with 46.5, followed by Cheap Bud Dupree Jersey (35.5), Cheap Cameron Heyward Jersey (32), and Cheap Stephon Tuitt Jersey (24). It wasn’t just them, though. The team combined for a total of 236 sacks during the streak, with 29 players contributing.

The Steelers defensive scheme sets the players up to be able to put up big sack numbers, but Coach Mike Tomlin said it starts with the players.

“Quality players. It starts there,” said Tomlin. “Guys like Bud (Dupree) and T.J. (Watt) and Cam (Heyward) and (Stephon) Tuitt. They provide a wave that we ride. They are good individually. They are good collectively. They are consistent in terms of their performances.”

Tomlin understands that as he was on the Tampa staff during three seasons of the streak (2001-03) as the defensive backs coach, so he definitely knows what it takes to have a streak like that.

“I have been a part of several groups like that,” said Tomlin. “I was fortunate to be a part of that Tampa group that this group often gets compared to. The thing I think about when I think about the two groups are the quality individual rushers who rush well together collectively.

“We’ve got guys you can characterize as really good individual rushers, but they rush very well together. The understanding of the larger body and how they fit into it makes it happen for them and that is what provides consistency.”

Steelers sack streak tidbits:
– The Steelers lead the NFL in sacks during the span of their sack streak.
– The Steelers recorded four plus sacks in 31 games during the streak, including two games with eight sacks (Week 4, 2019 vs. Cincinnati and Week 11, 2016 vs. Cleveland). They have only had nine games with just one sack.
– The Steelers have the most sacks against the Cheap Cleveland Browns Jerseys during the streak (44), with the Cheap Cincinnati Bengals Jerseys (30), and the Baltimore Ravens (29) next in line. The most sacked quarterbacks have been Andy Dalton (18) and Joe Flacco (14).
– The Steelers get sacks when it matters most as 65 of them during the streak have come in the fourth quarter.
– Devin Bush was the youngest player to record a sack during the streak, doing so while he was 21 years and 74 days old, while James Harrison was the oldest at 39 years and 164 days.

The Steelers broke the ice early in the second quarter following an opening 15 minutes that saw the two teams combine for six first downs and punt a combined six times.

Roethlisberger capped a 14-play, 72-yard drive in 6:16 with a 3-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Cheap Diontae Johnson Jersey. Wright converted the extra point and the Steelers led, 7-0. Running back Cheap Benny Snell Jersey converted a third-and-1 with a 2-yard gain at the outset of the drive, and Roethlisberger hit Johnson for 17 yards on third-and-12, Ebron for 15 on third-and-6 and wide receiver Cheap Chase Claypool Jersey for 8 on third-and-7 on the way to the end zone.

The Steelers struck again late in the second on a 50-yard catch-and-run touchdown connection from Roethlisberger to wide receiver Cheap James Washington Jersey. The one-play drive concluded a sequence that saw Snell stopped on fourth-and-goal from the Washington 1 and the Steelers’ defense force a three-and-out from the Washington offense. Wide receiver Cheap Ray-Ray McCloud Jersey 17-yard punt return established possession for the Steelers at midfield.

Wright’s second successful extra point made it 14-0 with 3:54 left in the first half.

Washington got on the scoreboard on a 49-yard field goal from Hopkins with one second left before the break. Washington used six plays and drove 28 yards in 49 seconds to close to within 14-3.

Inside linebacker Cheap Robert Spillane Jersey sack of Smith in the first quarter extended the Steelers streak of registering at least one sack to an NFL record-tying 69 consecutive games. Tampa Bay established the mark from 1999-2003.

Smith was sacked three times overall, including outside linebacker Cheap T.J. Watt Jersey NFL-leading 12th of the season. Watt forced a fumble in the fourth quarter that was recovered by Washington.

The Steelers out-gained Washington 211-114 in the opening 30 minutes, held a 17:11-12:49 edge in time of possession and converted four of nine third downs (44.4 percent) to zero for Washington in eight attempts.

Washington lost rookie running back Antonio Gibson to a toe injury in the first quarter after he’d carried twice and gained 14 yards on the ground.

The Steelers lost Spillane (knee) and cornerback Cheap Joe Haden Jersey (evaluated for a concussion) in the second half.
