PITTSBURGH — — So much for the weight of history. Or practicing. Or having your head coach on the sideline. Or an emotional leader on the field.

The Cleveland Browns overcame all of it. The burden of carrying the mantle of a franchise that’s long been a punchline. A schedule ravaged by a COVID-19 outbreak. A rival that for years has treated them like a harmless little brother.

All of that’s over. For now. And maybe for good.

The Browns dismantled the Cheap Pittsburgh Steelers Jerseys 48-37 in the wild-card round Sunday night, picking up the franchise’s first postseason victory in more than a quarter-century and earning a trip to Kansas City next Sunday to face the defending Super Bowl champions.

“We believe in the people in the room no matter what’s going on,” quarterback Cheap Baker Mayfield Jersey said. “We knew that everybody was counting us out. There was no extra pressure or anything. No one believed in us besides us.”

Playing with first-year head coach Kevin Stefanski, Pro Bowl guard Cheap Joel Bitonio Jersey and top cornerback Cheap Denzel Ward Jersey back in Cleveland after all tested positive for COVID-19, Cleveland (12-5) raced to the biggest first half by a road team in NFL playoff history then held on.

Mayfield threw for 263 yards and three touchdowns, including a screen pass that Cheap Nick Chubb Jersey turned into a 40-yard score that halted Pittsburgh’s momentum after the Steelers pulled within 12. Cheap Kareem Hunt Jersey added 48 yards and two TDs on the ground while Cleveland’s defense forced five turnovers to hand the Steelers (12-5) a staggering loss.

The victory was the Browns’ first postseason triumph of any kind since beating New England on New Year’s Day 1995 — three months before Mayfield was born — and their first playoff win on the road since Dec. 28, 1969.

The significance wasn’t lost on special teams coordinator Mike Priefer, a Cleveland native who found himself filling in when Stefanski tested positive for COVID-19.

“I grew up (a Browns fan), so I know what this means,” Priefer said.

Cleveland did it despite practicing just once over the last two weeks and having lost 17 straight at Heinz Field. The Browns did it with efficiency and swagger. And they did it with Priefer at the controls and offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt taking over the play-calling duties as Stefanski watched in his basement back in Ohio.

“We have a resilient team,” Mayfield said. “Defense played great in the first half and we kind of stalled out and let them climb back in the game, but that’s a great team win right there — guys stepping up all over the board. I’m proud of these guys.”

The Steelers certainly helped, ending a season in which they started 11-0 with a thud that could reverberate for years. Cheap Ben Roethlisberger Jersey ended his comeback season by throwing for 501 yards on an NFL-record 47 completions with four touchdowns and four interceptions.

“I don’t have any magical answers,” Roethlisberger said. “We just didn’t put it together. Tonight, the glaring issues is we turned the ball over.”

And over. And over. And the NFL’s third-ranked defense could do little to stem the tide. The Steelers led the NFL in sacks but failed to get to Mayfield. Cleveland’s 48 points were the most Pittsburgh has given up in the playoffs, surpassing the 45 to Jacksonville in the 2017 playoffs.

Pittsburgh’s problems started on the first play from scrimmage when center Cheap Maurkice Pouncey Jersey snap sailed by Roethlisberger into the end zone. Cleveland’s Cheap Karl Joseph Jersey fell on it for a touchdown. Roethlisberger threw three first-half interceptions, two of which led directly to Browns scores.

By the time the Steelers found their footing, they were down 28-0. Even when they did get it going on a 1-yard touchdown run by Cheap James Conner Jersey with 1:44 to go in the half, the Browns stormed right back. Mayfield capped a cathartic opening half with a masterful 64-yard drive that ended with a 7-yard toss to Cheap Austin Hooper Jersey with 34 seconds remaining. Pittsburgh countered with a field goal in the closing seconds but trailed 35-10 at the break.

Pittsburgh tried to claw back in it. The Steelers pulled within 35-23 at the end of the third quarter. Facing fourth-and-1 at the Pittsburgh 46 on the first play of the fourth, Tomlin opted to punt.

“I wanted to pin them down and maybe provide a short field for their offense,” Tomlin said. “I just wanted to keep the momentum going in terms of field positioning.”

It didn’t work out. The kick bounced into the end zone for a touchback and Mayfield calmly took Cleveland 80 yards in six plays. The sideline erupted as Chubb streaked into the end zone.

So much for the Browns being the Browns, a winking assessment Steelers wide receiver Cheap JuJu Smith-Schuster Jersey made about Cleveland in the middle of the week. Regardless of the intent — Smith-Schuster said after the game he didn’t regret it — Mayfield and All-Pro defensive end Cheap Myles Garrett Jersey took it to heart.

Then, in front of a mostly empty stadium and a national audience so accustomed to seeing them stumble, the Browns, who didn’t win a game in Garrett’s first season, took out their frustration by landing one haymaker after another.

“We’re the Cleveland Browns,” Garrett said with a smirk. “Same old Cheap Cleveland Browns Jerseys.”

Not so much anymore.

Browns: All-Pro tackle Cheap Jack Conklin Jersey was cleared to play after being listed as questionable with an “illness” on Friday. His return didn’t last long. He exited in the first half with a hamstring injury. Guard Michael Dunn, stepping in for Bitonio, left in the fourth quarter with a calf issue.

Steelers: Rookie linebacker Cheap Alex Highsmith Jersey sustained a high ankle sprain in the second half and did not return.

Browns: Will make their first divisional-round appearance since the 1994 playoffs when they face the Chiefs.

Steelers: Head into what will be a busy offseason. Several high-profile players, including Smith-Schuster and outside linebacker Cheap Bud Dupree Jersey, will become free agents. The 38-year-old Roethlisberger will also have to decide whether he wants to return for an 18th season.

The Cheap Cleveland Browns Jerseys have claimed WR Marvin Hall via waivers from Detroit.

Hall is 5-10, 192 pounds and in his fourth NFL season out of Washington. Hall entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the Raiders in 2016 and has since spent time with the Cardinals, Falcons and most recently, the Lions. This season with Detroit, Hall played in 11 games and caught 17 passes for 290 yards and two touchdowns. For his career, he’s registered 760 receiving yards on 36 receptions and five scores. Hall is a native of Los Angeles, Calif.

The Browns will receive a roster exemption for Hall that will expire once he’s permitted to join the team in accordance with testing protocols. He won’t count against the Active Roster Limit until that time.

As Cheap Baker Mayfield Jersey looked back at what led to one of the best performances of his career Sunday at Nissan Stadium, he remembered where the 2020 season started.

His first thoughts went back to the spring, when the Browns were forced to conduct their offseason through virtual meetings. They had a new head coach, a new offensive playbook and zero team practices to implement new plays before training camp.

For Mayfield, a third-year starter, the unusual offseason felt even less ideal — this season was arguably the most important of his career. He was out to prove himself as a better quarterback than what transpired in a disappointing 2019 campaign, and he used the difficult year as motivation to get better.

“The big thing now,” Mayfield said in July before training camp, “is slowing down and to be able to build on that, have that solid foundation and get better at something every day.”

The memories of that work, both for himself and the Browns, popped into his head as he answered questions about a historic performance against the Tennessee Titans. Mayfield went 25-of-33 for a season-high 334 yards, four touchdowns and a 147.0 quarterback rating, the second-highest of his career, in the Browns’ 41-35 win.

All four touchdowns came in the first half, which made him the first quarterback to accomplish the feat since Patrick Mahomes in Week 2 of 2019 and the first Browns quarterback to do it since Hall of Famer Otto Graham in 1951. The Browns scored 38 points in the first half, which is the most ever scored in a half in franchise history.

Mayfield made a statement: His best football is in front of him, and the hard work from the offseason is paying off.

“I’ve said it time in and time out,” Mayfield said. “Back in the spring, (we laid) our foundation and we laid our goals. We’re all on the same page.”

Mayfield only needed 17 minutes to cement Sunday as one of his best performances of the season.

In that time, he completed 12 passes for 186 yards and three touchdowns, his most in a game since he threw five in Week 7 against the Bengals. Mayfield was in sync with his receivers from the first snap, and that showed with his first touchdown to wide receiver Cheap Jarvis Landry Jersey and third touchdown to rookie receiver Cheap Donovan Peoples-Jones Jersey, who ran a deep ball from Mayfield into the end zone for 75 yards for the quarterback’s longest completion of the season.

His fourth touchdown, a 17-yard pass placed perfectly to Cheap Rashard Higgins Jersey, was special, too — that cemented the historic half for Mayfield.

But the second touchdown was most noteworthy. The play was made possible by brilliant play-calling, which certainly benefited Mayfield throughout Sunday’s offensive explosion.

The touchdown pass went to offensive tackle Cheap Kendall Lamm Jersey on third-and-1 from Tennessee’s 1-yard line. Mayfield faked a handoff to running back Cheap Nick Chubb Jersey, who leaped over the line of scrimmage to sell the fake to perfection, and then immediately looked at Lamm as he broke past defenders, ran into the end zone and turned around.

Lamm, who caught a pass with the Houston Texans as a rookie in 2015, was all alone. Mayfield floated a soft pass to him for his easiest touchdown of the game.

Chalk the success up to coach Kevin Stefanski, who said he drew up the trick play this week.

“We are going to do whatever it takes to win,” he said. “We are looking for the right play at the right time, and then to the players’ credit, they are executing at a high level.”

Stefanski and Mayfield worked in perfect fluidity throughout Sunday’s game. Both expressed admiration for their teamwork and execution, which has been in the works since Stefanski was hired in January. He was always confident he could take Mayfield’s play to another level, and he doubled down on his confidence after the Week 9 bye week.

“We can help him for sure in some of the design and some of the play calls,” Stefanski said after the bye. “I think he is ready to ascend.”

Consider part of that ascension met.

Mayfield was the biggest reason why the Browns were in control. These were the kinds of games Stefanski and Mayfield envisioned when he spoke with Mayfield through a laptop camera for most of the offseason. Both believed in each other, and Stefanski’s faith in the entire team instilled confidence in Mayfield, too.

The Browns certainly had the pieces to win lots of football games. Now, they have nine wins in a season for the first time since 2007, and they’re not done yet.

“There is a new standard and there is a foundation you have to continue to build on and improve,” he said. “That is just the way we need to handle things, and I think we are trending in the right direction.”

Mayfield might never feel “done.” He still critiques himself in his postgame interviews the same way he’s critiqued himself all year. He wants every throw to be perfect, and Sunday was an example of what can happen when he’s close to doing just that.

His performance wasn’t the result of luck. It happened after months of training on a field in his hometown in Austin, Texas, rather than in Berea, Ohio. It’s the result of months of establishing chemistry with teammates through a video screen and endless hours of analyzing each throw in practice.

That’s where it all started. After Sunday, Mayfield certainly took another giant leap to prove that those efforts have worked.

“The group of people that we have, we have been building and improving as the season has gone on, so I think we were all confident coming into this,” he said. “I’m confident with the group that we have. I believe in this team.”

The Browns rolled through the Eagles for a 22-17 Week 11 win that improved their record to 7-3, their best record after 10 games since 1994, and pushed them a step further in their push to the playoffs. The offense used big — and, at times, hurdle-filled — runs from their running backs to find the end zone. And even though the Browns were without defensive end Myles Garrett, the defense still made punishing plays against the Eagles’ offense.

Here are the plays that mattered most in the win:

Olivier Vernon shines with Cheap Myles Garrett Jersey sidelined, leads Browns to dominant defensive display
Cheap Sione Takitaki Jersey jump-starts Browns with biggest play of his career
Browns D rises to the challenge to down Eagles
By the Numbers: Nick Chubb hits 3,000 career rushing yards in style
Cheap Baker Mayfield Jersey: “We have the best backfield in the league”
Kevin Stefanski: “Really thought the defense set the tempo in that game”
1. Browns force red-zone takeaway on first Eagles’ drive

Cleveland was without two of its top defensive playmakers when the Eagles entered the red zone on their first drive of the game.

Garrett, who entered Sunday with the NFL lead with 9.5 sacks and was tied for the lead with four forced fumbles, was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list Friday. Safety Cheap Ronnie Harrison Jersey, who was on the field for every defensive snap in Week 10, exited the field earlier in the drive to get looked at by the medical staff.

But the absences of two top players didn’t stop the defense from halting an early threat from Philadelphia. Running back Miles Sanders lost his grip on the ball as he moved through the trenches at Cleveland’s 5-yard line. Safety Cheap Karl Joseph Jersey, who entered in relief of Harrison, pounced on the ball and sealed the turnover.

That was only the start of a massive day from the defense.

2. Sione Takitaki seals first career pick-six

The Browns defense re-invigorated their turnover abilities Sunday in quick fashion.

When quarterback Carson Wentz, who led the NFL with 12 interceptions entering Week 11, dropped back for a second-and-7 from Cleveland’s 46-yard line, he didn’t see cornerback Denzel Ward bringing pressure. Ward got a piece of Wentz’s throwing arm, and the ball sailed high in the air.

Takitaki was in the area and had plenty of time to make the catch and sprint to the end zone. He dropped to his knees and held out his arms once he crossed the goal line and celebrated with teammates to cap off the biggest play of his NFL career.

The Browns were up 7-0, and the defense was eating into the Eagles’ offense early.

3. Mayfield fumbles, Eagles recover in the red zone

The Browns’ first drive of the second half took a quick and unfortunate turn on second-and-8 from Cleveland’s 30-yard line.

As Mayfield maneuvered through the pocket for a pass attempt, Pro Bowl DT Fletcher Cox swatted his hand at the football, which slipped away from Mayfield’s grasp and fell backwards into an empty backfield. No Browns players saw the fumble — the ball was behind all of them — which made it easy for Eagles linebacker Alex Singleton to pounce on it at the 19-yard line.

The Eagles quickly turned the takeaway into points and threw a touchdown on the next play to even the score at 7-7.

4. Vernon sacks Wentz in the end zone for a safety

The Browns defensive line thrived without its best player against the Eagles’ offense.

Even though Garrett wasn’t on the field with them, each player from the defensive line had bright moments Sunday. None was bigger than Cheap Olivier Vernon Jersey game-changing play in the third quarter.

Vernon recorded his third sack of the game when he sacked Wentz into the end zone grass for a safety that put the Browns up 12-7. Vernon, as well as Cheap Larry Ogunjobi Jersey, Cheap Sheldon Richardson Jersey and Cheap Adrian Clayborn Jersey, all stepped up with big games to fill the void from Garrett. Vernon, meanwhile, recorded the most sacks by a Browns player since Garrett in Week 2 of last season.

5. Hunt flies over defender for second TD

Cheap Kareem Hunt Jersey took flight with 9 minutes left in the fourth quarter — literally.

Hunt appeared to run on air as he hurdled over Jalen Mills to reach the pylon for a 5-yard touchdown run that put the Browns up 19-10 after a successful PAT. He originally broke a tackle from a defender in the backfield before he turned the corner and prepared his leap, and he landed in the end zone when both feet finally returned to the ground.

The unbelievable play followed another special run from another Browns running back. Cheap Nick Chubb Jersey broke free for a 54-yard run just two plays earlier, and his big play also featured a few broken tackles and shifty jukes.

Cleveland has turned to its run game to seal wins all season. That plan worked again Sunday.

6. Ward intercepts Wentz to finish the win

A full four-quarter effort from the defense was capped off in grand fashion from “The Warden.”

On the play directly after he was called for pass interference, cornerback Cheap Denzel Ward Jersey leaped and grabbed a high pass attempt intended for wide receiver Alshon Jeffery. The Eagles were threatening at Cleveland’s 10-yard line for a late-game touchdown that would’ve brought the score to within one possession, but Ward capitalized on the errant pass for the Browns’ second interception and third turnover of the afternoon.

The Eagles received the ball back with just over a minute left and scored a touchdown, which made Ward’s red-zone interception even more important to secure the win.
